Hello! I'm Michelle, I live in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
I wanted to tell you a little bit about the who, and the why!
I am a mother of two small children, engaged to my fiancé for so long we already call each other husband and wife! We also have a fluffy cloud, aka our cat. We have always lived a pretty simple and basic life, never ones that lavishly spend where it's not necessary. I want to raise my children to become great examples of how a life can be lived perfectly comfortably without damaging the world that brought us into existence. We need to thank the planet for our lives! Love the planet! It saddens me to see so many people who take it for granted, and treat the things we need to live (air and water!) like a rubbish bin!
What brought me to wanting to live a zero waste life (or perhaps a more sustainable life) was discovering how plastics can affect not only the oceans, nature and animals, but also us humans. I have been brought to tears watching 'A Plastic Ocean' and being scared for my children's future wellbeing. I have been brought to tears watching animal parents feed their babies something that WILL kill them! It will be our fault..
I WILL NOT BE ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO DID NOTHING!
I will not be one of the people who saw the devastation and carried on exactly the same as if my actions make no difference.
EVERYTHING MAKES A DIFFERENCE
I want everyone to stop believing that one person makes no difference. We need to stop this mindset.
It has been quite difficult (and a bit more expensive than usual) shopping with the intention of buying no disposable plastic.
I kept myself awake for hours picturing the perfect zero waste store!
This is where ecoTopia came to be, so EVERYONE can choose zero waste, even those with a low income!
Hello! I'm Samantha (call me Sam!) I have a husband and a little baby boy.
We currently live in Selby, a small town in North Yorkshire.
I want to open a zero waste shop for my little boy, and for the world I want him to grow up in and inherit from me.
It truly breaks my heart how over the last 60 or so years humans have been unaware(or ignorant) of the fact that single use plastic should never have been a "thing", and how we have been using the ocean as a large scale garbage disposal solution. Assuming the ocean was large enough to have no effect from this was wrong. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!! Why did people ever think it was ok??(and still is ok in some cases!!) And why was plastic even ever considered to be a disposable commodity when it doesn't degrade??
I'm hoping from this you can see how passionate I am about changing things. My sister and I have teamed up to give ourselves, and others, the choice to avoid single use plastic and begin immersing ourselves into a circular and more sustainable economy. It is how things were before plastic was invented, so why can't we go back to that just because we have gotten so used to plastic being in our lives? Convenience should never take priority over the health of the world we call home. As many have said: There is no planet B. And there isn't. If the world dies because of plastic I couldn't live with myself if I had chosen to do nothing about it, and then pass on that world to my son.
So this is me, and my sister, choosing to do something and bringing Leeds the same choice to help contribute in a small way to solve a massive worldwide problem, which is actually, quite simple to solve...when you have the option!
Hey guys, I’m Luke. As well as working here at Ecotopia I also study fine art at Leeds Beckett university, where I’m in my third year. My artwork is mostly focussed around environmental issues with raising awareness of the effects of plastic pollution being at the centre of what I do. Feeling lucky to be working here with some great people trying to make a difference.
